The Field School of Hvar

  Hvar, Croatia

  Multiple Sessions

Poised between the Adriatic Sea and the Dinaric Alps, the Mediterranean island of Hvar is graced by a sublime beauty. Immerse in a culture steeped in the rhythms of nature and fellowship. Take part in a vibrant international community of families and friends. Rediscover the wonder of our world alongside your children as they explore science, art, and society as never before. The Camp is led by a group of experienced educators, fluent in English and well-versed in learner-led pedagogy and practice. They serve to ensure a safe and constructive environment for our campers, preparing materials, moderating discussion groups, organizing group games, and giving helpful nudges during lab times. The Field School of Hvar has a singular focus on connecting young people with the wild wonder of authentic learning. All children are different, so our program offers a range of activities from al fresco painting to rock-climbing to reading symposia. Topics likewise span marine biology and civic leadership, boat-building and folklore, urban design and fluid dynamics. Incorporating local experts and artisans at every step, children are empowered to go as far as their curiosity takes them. Each age group is supported by a Guide with relevant experience to that developmental stage. We aim for a student-teacher ratio that is supportive without being overbearing. For Early Learners (4-6), there is one Guide for every five children. For Lower Elemnentary (7-8) the balance is seven to one. And for the two older groups, Upper Elementary (9-10) and Middle (11-12), there are ten children for each Guide. Just as importantly, children will interact daily with a wide array of local artisans and global experts through workshops, site visits, and other programs.
